This is most ancient Bodhi -  tree Shrine of the abhayagiri monastery as reported by the chinese monk fa-hine, who visited Sri Lanka in the 5th century A.D. The Buddha images and Vajrasanas ( Sacred Seats) found around the Bodhi tree, and the remains of four construction phases from the frist century B.C. are visible has the Bodhi tree that was originally planted here was from a seedling of the Jayasrimaha Bodhi tree of India.
