The later Brahmi rock inscription discovered as Vessagiriya has the words " isiramana" and another inscription, established by King Mihindu IV; which has the words written as " isira Menuvan" provides evidence to identify this place as the ancient " issara samana" ( Isurumuniya) viharaya.chronicle details reveal that one of the first eight saplings of the Sri Maha Bhodi Tree has been planted here.
