Mirisavetiya - Anuradhapura Sri Lanka

Mirisavetiya
Located inside the Mahamevna park, this stupa has been built by King Dutu Gemunu ( 161 - 137 B.C.) According to the chronicle, this is the first construction work of " stupa" of the king. After elimination the Cola infiuence and bringing the country under a single flag and on the seventh day after the victory and following the prevailing traditions; king and the entourage have arrived at the Tisa Veva for water sports he deposited his holy trident and other clothes in a nearby place and enjoyed the occasion. In the afternoon when he remove the trident but it could not be moved; king seeing this miracle , has worshiped the trident with scented the holy weapon by enshrining it; as described in the chronicle Maha Vamsa. Construction work continued for a period of three years and on completion of the stupa, it has been offered to an assemblage of invitees consisting of 100,000 monks and 90,000 female - " bhikkus". Stupa was named as " Mirisavetiya" for the oversinght of not offering a capsicum dish to the monks. King Gajabahu (114-136 A.D), King Kasyapa V (914-923 A.D.), King Parakramabahu ( 1153- 1186 A.D.), and King Nissankamalla ( 1187-1196 A.D.) have carried out renovations of the stupa and the surrounding monastery compounds. Last renovation work after it was ruined, has been carried out by the Department of Archaeolohy in the year 1987. Cuttently this is a protected archaeologicalreserve.
