Lovamahapaya
This was built by the King Dutugemununu (161 - 137 B.C. during his reign. for the use of monks of the Maha Viharaya; for theie performances in the chapter house. Prior to this, it is believed that King Devana petis also built a chapter house at this place. Upper levels of this structure are believed to have been consttructed with timber, while during the reigns of various kings this massive edifice has been renovated. Chronicle data reveals that during the reign of King Saddhatissa (137-119 B.C.), this building has been destroyed by fire and tha king re-constructed it to include seven stories. Once again this was renovated by King Bhathikabhaya (22 B.C), king Aamanda Gamini (19-29 A.D.) King Sirinaga (240-242 A.D.) and King Gotahbhaya (249-263 A.D.) ect. Many other rulers up to Parakramabahu the Great of Polonnaruva have carried out renovations of this building. This is a protected archaeological monument.
