Ruvanveliseya also identified by other names such as "Mahathupa",Svarnamali", "Rathnamali" was built by King dutu Gemunu (161 -137 B.C.) chronicle Thupa Vasmsa Jiscloses many details about the construction of this "stupa" and it is believed to be the location honoured by "Arahat Mahinda Thera". Though the constrution was commenced by King Dutu Gemunu, his brother King Saddhatissa completed the contruction work after his demine. Walls depicting elephants around the edge of the terrace with paved stone slabs of the stupa have been constructed by King Saddhatissa. subsequently King Lajjatissa (119-109 B.C), King Khallatanaga (109-103 B.C.) , King Bhathikabhaya (19-9 B.C.) ect., rulers up to king Nissankamalla of Polommaruwa have carried our various renovations as revealed by facts given the chronicles.

Ruvanveliseya has been renovated to the present condition by the Ruvanveliseya Devolopment Society headed by Ven. Naranvita Sumanasara Thero. Pinnacle was placed in the year 1940. After the renovation works, this "stupa" stands at 350 feet and with the diameter of 300 feet. Currently the "stupa" has been declared a protector Monument.
