Isurumuniya temple was built by King Devanampiyatissa (250-210 BC.) 500 children of high-caste (Isurumuniya) were ordained by the maha thera' and the temple was built for them to resude. Hence the name Isuru - muniya. Isurumuniya lover. the 6th Cwntury Gupta style carving on stone is said to represent king Dutugemunu's son Saliya and maiden Asokamala for whom he gave up the throne.
